CHILDREN’S VISION
Dr. Flynn at Christenson Vision Care is residency trained specialist in pediatric optometry. We are able to measure vision and examine children of all ages.
The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that all children have their first eye exam by the time they reach 1 year of age. Our doctors participate in the InfantSEE program, which enables any child between 6 and 12 months of age to have a FREE comprehensive eye exam. The purpose of the InfantSEE program is to provide early detection of potential vision problems that could hinder vision development.

The AOA further recommends that children with no symptoms or risk factors for eye problems have their next exam at age 3 and then prior to entering kindergarten. From that point, the recommendation is for a comprehensive eye exam every 1-2 years. Children with eye problems or at high risk for eye problems may need more frequent eye exams.
Keep in mind that a vision screening done by the pediatrician, school nurse, or other organization is not a full comprehensive eye exam. Although screenings may detect some vision problems, they are not designed to evaluate eye health or rule-out all types of vision issues.
Our doctors perform thorough eye exams on pediatric patients that include eye teaming, eye focusing, and depth perception testing, in addition to checking for glasses and ocular diseases. They are able to diagnose and treat a variety of children’s vision problem including:
- Amblyopia (lazy eye)
- Strabismus (eye misalignment)
- Binocular vision dysfunctions (eye teaming problems) such as convergence insufficiency and convergence excess
- Accommodative dysfunction (eye focusing problems)
- Other visual problems that cause difficulties in reading and learning
